Pillamos a Taylor Lautner, una de las estrellas de Luna Nueva, para hablar sobre su trabajo en la última entrega en los cines de la saga Crepúsculo.
Sus 17 años le convierten en la parte más joven del triángulo fantástico de “Crepúsculo”, pero su edad no tiene nada que ver con su experiencia en lo que a disciplina se refiere. A los 11 estaba en lo alto del ranking del campeonato del mundo de karate en cuatro estilos distintos de este estilo; a los 12, se proclamó campeón del mundo junior. Al año siguiente, Robert Rodríguez [Spy Kids, Sin City] lo escogió para hacer de un pequeño héroe de acción en la película “Las aventuras de Sharkboy y Lavagirl en 3D”, seguido inmediatamente por el papel de uno de los críos en la película de Steve Martin “Doce en casa”. Aunque no se suele tomar descansos desde que entró en primer curo en el Dojo [academia de artes marciales], Lautner estuvo muy entusiasmado en esta entrevista, donde confiesa a BOXOFFICE ente risas que está enamorado de las comedias románticas y si alguna vez ha salido con una fan o no.
Si aún no se hubieran escrito los dos últimos libros de la saga, ¿qué crees que tendría que hacer Jacob para ganarse el corazón de Bella?
No creo que él hubiera cambiado nada, y tampoco creo que debiera hacerlo. Jacob y Edward son tíos completamente distintos y solo depende de si te gusta un tío o el otro. Jacob es Jacob, y tiene una relación con Bella que Edward no tiene, y viceversa. Así que no cambiaría nada.
Como actor, ¿cómo haces para que los espectadores estén de parte de Jacob y se sientan identificados con sus sentimientos para cuando se conozca el triángulo amoroso?
Bueno, hay que hacer las cosas una por una. Cuando rodamos “Luna Nueva”, yo no pienso sobre “Eclipse”. Cuando rodamos “Eclipse”, no pienso sobre “Amanecer”. Solo tenemos que centrarnos en la películas que estámos rodando en ese momento.
¿Cómo se sienten tu familia y tus amigos al ver que la gente chilla con tus fotos sin camiseta?
[Risas] Es raro. Para mí es embarazoso, y estoy seguro de que para ellos es de lo más extraño.
¿Se han burlado de ti por esto en las cenas familiares?
Aún no, y espero que no ocurra nunca o me pondré muy colorado.
Empezaste a actuar a través del karate. ¿Coinciden en algo? Parece que ambos necesitan mucha concentración.
Es mucho trabajo, y muy duro. Probablemente eso es algo que gané en karate: también era mucho trabajo. Mucho entrenamiento. Y eso se achaca a todo en esta vida.
Eso te ha ayudado con tus personajes en “Crepúsculo” y la película de Robert Rodríguez.
Por supuesto. Y me encanta la acción, así que me ayudó muchísimo.
Todo el mundo habla sobre todos esos músculos que has ganado. El furor hacia los actores y su peso cambia, y eso se ve en actores más mayores que están más asentados. Tienes 17 años – ¿cómo llevas el que la gente le preste tanta atención a tus biceps?
Es diferente. Solo fue por el curro, simplemente. Sabía que Jacob iba a transformarse de “Crepúsculo” a “Luna Nueva”, no solo mentalmente, sino también físicamente. Yo quería ser capaz de caracterizarlo perfectamente para todos los fans. Esa era mi mayor motivación. Aunque fue muy duro.
¿Le gustaría a tu antiguo entrenador de karate que esos músculos hubieran estado cuando competías?
Probablemente no habría sido tan flexible, así que no habría servido de mucho. Creo que él está agradecido por ello.
¿Qué es lo que te gusta de hacer el papel de Jacob?
Me encanta la relación entre Jacob y Bella. Es diferente de la de Edward y Bella. Jacob y Bella empiezan como muy buenos amigos. Después se convierten en mejores amigos – se pueden contar el uno al otro cualquier cosa, hacen cualquier cosa juntos, como conducir motos. Eso me encanta. Y más tarde su relación empieza a crecer más y más, y te planteas si van a llegar a ser algo más que amigos. Me encanta ser capaz de hacer eso. Y trabajar con una gran actriz, Kristen Stewart, y toda la ayuda que hay a nuestro alrededor, como el director Chris Weitz y todo el equipo. Es muy divertido.
¿Qué verán los chicos de tu edad en “Luna Nueva”?
Hay mucha más acción que en “Crepúsculo”. Es mucho más entretenida – hay vampiros y hombres-lobo, lo que provoca muchas peleas porque no se llevan muy bien. Y no solo la acción, sino que toda la historia sigue también. Ahora hay una tercera persona en el juego.
Hace años que no sacan buenas películas de hombres-lobo – siempre eran vampiros, luego zombies, luego otra vez vampiros... ¿Qué mola de los hombres-lobo?
Son distintos. Los licántropos son extremadamente fuertes, lo que mola mucho. Pero es un plomazo porque en realidad yo no llego a hacer el papel de mi lobo. Es una imagen completamente generada por ordenador, así que siempre estamos o yo o el lobo generado. Y eso no mola, pero sé que va a quedar genial en la peli. Estoy impaciente por verlo.
Sobre eso de los lobos... ¿has tenido que llevar ese movimiento típico de los animales en tu actuación?
La diferencia está en que en “Luna Nueva” hago el papel de Jacob antes y después de la transformación. No se transforma hasta la mitad de la película. Para la parte del antes, el libro describe a Jacob como algo patoso, se tropieza con sus propios pies... en fin, es un niño. Y tan pronto como se transforma, de repente se convierte en alguien extremadamente agil. Hay algunas escenas que muestran su nueva agilidad, que fue lo que más me costó mostrar.
SPOILER AMANECER
No voy a spoilear mucho, pero para Jacob, el amor de su vida se transforma completamente en el cuarto libro de la saga y creo que eso va a ser difícil de entender para la gente que no se ha leído los libros. ¿Tienes alguna idea de cómo llevar esa “imprimación” de Jacob hacia la hija de Bella?
Estoy seguro de que será diferente. Para mí fue una enorme sorpresa cuando me leí el libro. Pero estamos intentando centrarnos en la peli que estamos rodando a cada momento, y no se ha confirmado todavía nada para la cuarto, así que ahora mismo, estamos concentrados en “Eclipse”.
¿Qué es lo que más te gusta hacer cuando estás rodando una película?
Siempre llevo un balón de fútbol conmigo, y siempre hay un montón de gente en el equipo de rodaje que le gusta jugar, así que lanzo la pelota y jugamos un rato. Me mantiene entretenido.
¿Hay algún actor en particular que te guste y quieras llevar su carrera cinematográfica?
Siempre me ha encantado Matt Damon. Adoro la serie de Bourne. También Brad Pitt y Denzel Washington. Me gustaría tener una carrera variada. No solo pelis de acción, sino también dramas como los que hacen esos tres actores, me gustaría tener diferentes papeles. También comedias románticas – creo que los mejores ejemplos para eso son Gerard Butler y Ryan Reynolds.
Muchas veces se menosprecia a Ryan Reynolds, pero es genial.
Desde luego.
¿Y como fue trabajar con Garry Marshall [“Pretty Woman”, “Novia a la fuga”] para “El Día de San Valentín”?
Fue genial. Estaba muy entusiasmado de hacer esa peli antes de volver para rodar “Eclipse”. Trabajar con Garry es algo que solo ocurre una vez en la vida. Fue muy divertido y no puedo esperar a que salga en Febrero.
Es que es el rey de las comedias románticas. Seguro que si quisieras, estarías preparado para meterte en una.
Desde luego. Es que... no se puede pedir más.
En la peli ¿estás enamorado de la otra Taylor, Taylor Swift?
Sí, en la peli, y fue muy divertido.
¿Se te rompió el corazón por ella cuando Kanye saltó a por ella en los Video Music Awards?
Sí. Fue... inoportuno...
¿Qué película adoras pero te da vergüenza admitirlo?
“El Diario de Noa”. Pero no creo... debería darme vergüenza admitirlo, pero es que es una película genial. No me da vergüenza, lo digo bien alto.
Una de las cosas que me parecen más interesantes sobre Jacob es que es un personaje que es un indio americano puesto en escena en un lío romántico. Creo que la última vez que eso ocurrió, Daniel Day-Lewis o Kevin Costner estaban en el ajo.
Es que nunca he pensado en ello así, ya sabes... Supongo que sí, que la última vez que pasó eso fue en “El Último Mohicano”.
¿Tienes alguna ascendencia india de tu madre?
No, soy sobretodo holandés, alemán y francés. Eso es básicamente lo que soy.
He oído que también tienes algo de Ottawa y Potawatomi.
No tenemos la menor idea de cuánto tenemos de eso – supongo que es un antepasado muy muy muy lejano.
Bueno, está bien. Yo también soy holandesa, y da igual cómo nos representen, nunca se nos da el crédito suficiente en nuestro trabajo.

¿Saldrías alguna vez con una fan?
No excluyo a nadie...
¿Cómo has llevado lo de los fans?
Todo lo que puedo decir es que es asombroso. Yo siempre lo he respetad, y es increíble tener el apoyo y la pasión de los fans con nosotros. Estamos tan agradecidos porque, sin ellos, no estaríamos hoy en el número 3 en la lista de películas de Vancouver. Son geniales.
He visto que hay dos libros escritos sobre ti en Amazon.
¿En serio?
Uno es una biografía no autorizada y otro es un libro de 94 páginas de dibujos.
Oh dios. Supongo que si no está autorizada, no es muy fiable. No te creas nada de lo que oigas... o, en este caso, leas.
La gente podría decir que eres mitad alien, mitad príncipe.
Ya, y ¡todo el mundo lo creería! No estaría muy bien eso. Es diferente. Toda este merchandaising no es como el resto. Lo que, por otra parte, también es genial.
¿Evitas no buscarte en internet?
Desde luego. No estaría bien hacer eso. Definitivamente, hay que tratar de estar lo más alejado de eso o acabas creyéndotelo.
¿Tus padres hacen algo para que tu vida se mantenga normal? ¿Tipo “sí, sí, sí, ya sabemos que hay millones de chicas chillando por ti, pero eres un chico completamente normal”?
Desde luego. Y espero que eso no les lleve mucho trabajo. Yo también siento lo mismo: soy la misma persona que antes. Pero esto es un mundo completamente distinto. Tengo mi propio mundo, y luego el de “Crepúsculo”.

As Twilight's Jacob—the Quileute Indian high-schooler who learns how to transform into a werewolf just as his classmates learn to shave—Lautner was launched into international stardom, and the most surprising thing about it is the young athlete was first considered too scrawny to make the transition to the brawnier, more action-packed sequel, New Moon. One year and thirty pounds of muscle later (every ounce of which was breathlessly detailed on fansites), Lautner's on the cover of magazines, he's featured prominently on New Moon's poster and, true to form, the young actor is already hard at work on the third installment in the series, 2010's Eclipse. Though he's hardly had a break since he first entered the dojo as a first-grader, Lautner's in high spirits, laughing his way through an interview where he tells BOXOFFICE about his secret love for romantic comedies and whether he'd ever date a fan.
If the last two books in the series hadn't already been written, what do you think Jacob should do to win over Bella?
I don't think he would have changed anything, and I don't think he should change anything. Jacob and Edward are extremely different guys and it's just whether you want one guy or another. Jacob is himself, and he has a relationship with Bella that Edward doesn't. And Edward has a relationship with Bella that Jacob doesn't. So I wouldn't change a thing.
As an actor, how do you make the audience root for Jacob and get invested in his feelings when the outcome of the love triangle is already known?
Well, you try and take things one step at a time. When I'm filming New Moon, I'm not thinking about Eclipse. When I'm filming Eclipse, I'm not thinking about Breaking Dawn. We just have to focus on the movie that we're doing.
What is it like for your family and friends to see people scream at pictures of you topless?
[Laughs] It's weird. It's embarrassing for me, and I'm sure it's awkward for all of them.
Have you gotten teased about it at family dinners?
Not yet, and I'm hoping that doesn't happen because I'll start blushing.
You came into acting from karate. Do they overlap—they seem to share the need for focus and concentration.
It's a lot of hard work. That's probably the most I got out of karate: it was a lot of work. A lot of training. And you need that for everything in life.
It's helped you take on these physical roles with Twilight and the Robert Rodriguez film.
Absolutely. And I love action, so it definitely helps with that.
Everybody has been talking about the muscle that you've put on. The furor around actors and their weight changes is something you usually see happen with older actors who are more established. You're 17—what is that like to have people paying so much attention to your biceps?
It's different. It was all for the job, and that's all. I knew that Jacob was going to transform not only mentally, but physically as well, from Twilight to New Moon, and I wanted to be able to portray him correctly for all the fans. That was my motivation. It was a lot of hard work, though.
Does your old karate coach wish you had that much muscle on you back when you were still competing?
I probably wouldn't have been as flexible, so it wouldn't have worked out that well. He's probably thankful.
What do you like about playing Jacob?
I love Jacob and Bella's relationship. It's very different from Edward and Bella's. Jacob and Bella start off as really good friends. They become best friends—they can tell each other anything, they do whatever together, ride motorcycles. I love that. And then their relationship starts growing into more and more, and you wonder if they're going to go past friends. I love being able to do that. And work with an amazing actress, Kristen Stewart, and all of the help around us, our director Chris Weitz, the whole crew. It's a lot of fun.
What will draw guys your age to New Moon?
There's a lot more action than Twilight. It's more exciting—it has werewolves and vampires, which creates fights because they don't get along. Not only does the action step up, but the whole story line does as well. Now there's a third person involved.
It's been years since we've had a good werewolf film—it's been vampires, then zombies, then vampires again. What's awesome about werewolves?
They're different. Werewolves are extremely strong, which is cool. But it's a bummer because I don't actually get to play my werewolf. It's full-blown CGI; it's either me or a CGI werewolf. So that's a bummer, but I know they're going to look awesome in the film. I'm excited to see it.
That wolfness—do you have to bring that animal movement in your human performance?
The only difference is in New Moon, I play pre-transformation Jacob, and post. He doesn't transform into a werewolf until halfway through the film. For pre-transformation, the books describe Jacob as clumsy. He trips over his own feet—he's a kid. And as soon as he transforms, he all of a sudden because extremely agile. There's several scenes that show his new agility, so that was the biggest thing I had to bring out.
Not to jump ahead too much, but Jacob's love life takes a turn in the fourth book that I think might be hard to translate to people who haven't read the series. Do you have any thoughts on how to handle his 'imprinting' on Bella's daughter?
I'm sure it would be different. It was definitely a surprise for me when I read the book. But we're just trying to take it one movie at a time, and nothings been confirmed yet on the fourth, so we're just staying focused on Eclipse at the moment.
What is your favorite thing to do while shooting a movie?
I always carry a football around with me, and there's a lot of people on set between the crew and the cast who like to play, so I'm always throwing the football around and that keeps me entertained.
Whose career do you want to have?
I've always loved Matt Damon. I love the Bourne series. Brad Pitt, Denzel Washington. But I'd also like to change things up. Not only do I like the action movies, the drama movies that all three of those actors do, I'd also love to challenge myself with different roles. Romantic comedies—I think the best examples would be Gerard Butler, Ryan Reynolds.
Ryan Reynolds has been so under-appreciated—he's amazing.
Definitely.
Tell me then about working with Garry Marshall [Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride] for Valentine's Day.
It was awesome. I was so glad I got to do that before I went back and filmed Eclipse. Working with Garry—that's a once in a lifetime thing. It was a lot of fun and I can't wait to see it when it comes out in February.
When it comes to romantic comedies, he's the king. If you wanted to get into them, there you are already.
Absolutely. I know—I couldn't have asked for more.
Are you romancing the other Taylor, Taylor Swift, in it?
Yes, in the movie. Which was a lot of fun.
Did you heart break for her when Kanye jumped in during the video music awards?
Yeah. It was...unfortunate.
What is a movie you love that you're embarrassed to admit?
The Notebook. I don't think I should be embarrassed to admit it though—it's a great movie. I'm not embarrassed. I'm saying it proudly.
One of the things I think is interesting about Jacob is he's an American Indian character put out there as this gorgeous romantic lead. The last time I can remember that happening, Daniel Day-Lewis or Kevin Costner were involved.
You know, I really haven't thought of it like that, so that's interesting? Thinking about that, yeah, it goes back to Last of the Mohicans.
You have some heritage yourself from your mother's side?
I'm mainly Dutch, German and French. That's pretty much who I am.
I heard there was also some Ottawa and Potawatomi?
We have no idea how much there is—it's in my far distant background.
Fair enough. I'm Dutch as well, so way to represent us—we don't get enough credit either.

Would you ever date a fan?
I don't exclude anyone...
What has that been like, dealing with the fan experience?
All I can say is it's mind-blowing. I, myself—and nobody else—ever expected it, so it's incredible to have the support and the passion of the fans behind us. We're so thankful because we wouldn't be here today on movie number three in Vancouver if it wasn't for them. They're amazing.
I saw that you have two books written about you on Amazon.
Are you serious?!
One is an unauthorized biography and the other is a 94-page picture book.
Oh my. I guess if it's unauthorized, then you can't believe anything. Don't believe anything you hear—or read.
People could say that you're half-alien, half-prince.
And everyone would be believing it. That would not be good. It's different. This whole franchise is unlike anything else. Which is a good thing, it's awesome.
Do you avoid Googling yourself?
Absolutely. That would not be good if I did that. Definitely try to stay away from that or it could get in your head.
Are you parents doing anything to try to keep your life in check? 'Yeah, yeah, yeah, there's millions of girls screaming, but you're still a normal kid?'
Absolutely. I'm hoping it doesn't take too much work. I feel the exact same—I'm the same person as before. It's just a completely different world. I have my world, and then I have Twilight world.
